The state health directorate has issued a public notice warning private medical practitioners and private hospitals that they stand to lose
their registration if they turn away patients showing H1N1 flu-like symptoms.
The notice also tells private medical practitioners not to refer patients to Naidu hospital who do not meet the condition, "suspect case for novel influenza A' H1N1 (swine flu)".
The notice says that private practitioners will lose their Maharashtra Medical Council registration and hospitals their nursing home registration if they shunned patients with flu-like symptoms.
Speaking to TOI, assistant health director Ravindra Katti said the notice was issued after a large number of people with fever and/or cough and cold were referred to Naidu and Aundh general hospitals "out of unnecessary fear and concern".
Only people meeting the criteria mentioned in the notice should be referred by private medical practitioners to Naidu or Aundh hospital for further evaluation. "The final decision of the need for testing will be taken by the doctors at these two hospitals," Katti said.
The public notice mentions that on August 5, thousands of patients were referred to Naidu hospital, "which crowded the place and a law-and-order situation was created". The notice states, "This makes it clear that private hospitals/private medical practitioners have avoided treating patients," the notice states.
However, medical practitioners under the banner of the Jan Arogya Abhiyan have questioned the warning given by the health directorate. They said that confusion prevailed among doctors because of unclear instructions given by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the health authorities until August 6. "The instructions given to the doctors are inadequate and faulty," they said.
