No new B Ed colleges next year: Council

No new B Ed colleges next year: Council

With the aim to curb the burgeoning teacher education industry in the states, National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has barred permission to new B Ed and D Ed colleges in the state for the academic year 2010-2011.

A public notice issued by NCTE member secretary Hasib Ahmad said that a ban on further recognition or permission to new institutes is a temporary measure to regulate growth of the teacher training sector. In Maharashtra, NCTE will not accept any new proposal for BEd and DEd colleges for 2010-2011.

After facing severe criticism for burgeoning teacher education institutes and their reverse proportion to availability of jobs, NCTE is regulating teacher colleges over the last few years. NCTE takes review of availability of jobs and number of aspirants every year and regulates colleges in each state.

D ED COLLEGES
- Existing colleges: 1,102
- Colleges subject to Supreme Court Order: 291
- Seats for 2009-2010: 72,000
(+15,000 if 291 colleges get permission for admissions)
- Vacancies created every year: 15,000
