UGC NET EXAMINATION

* The UGC (NET) Humanities is conducted by the University Grants Commission.
* The UGC(NET) Test will determine the eligibility of Indian National candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowships and for appointment of Lecturers in Universities and colleges in the subjects falling in Humanities (including languages) and Social Sciences.
* The UGC (NET) Humanities Test comprises of 3 papers.

Eligibility:
(i) Candidates who have secured at least 55% marks (50% marks for SC/ST) in Masters Degree or equivalent examination in Humanities (including languages) and Social Sciences,Computer Applications, Electronic Sciences etc. are eligible for this test.

(ii) Candidates who are inthe final year or have appeared for Masters degree or equivalent examination can also apply for the test. However, such candidates will be considered eligible for JRF/LS only after they have passed the Masters Degree examination or equivalent with atleast 55% (50% marks for SC/ST) marks.

(iii)The Ph.D. degree holders whose Master's level examination were completed by 19th September, 1991(irrespective of date of declaration of result) shall be eligible for relaxation of 5% of marks (i.e from 55% to 50%) to appear in NET Examination.


(iv) EXEMPTION(Eligibility for Lecturership) - 1. For M.Phil / Ph.D. candidates -Candidates who have passed their M.Phil degree by 31st December 1993 or have submitted their Ph.D. thesis to the University in the concerned subject on or before 31st December 2002 are exempted from appearing in the NET exam.Candidates who have passed the UGC / CSIR JRF examination prior to 1989 are also exempted from appearing in the NET Examination.

2. For SLET candidates -Candidates who have cleared SLET accredited by the UGC for Lecturership prior to 1st June 2002, are exempted from appearing in the NET examination. For SLET examinations scheduled in or after June 2002, the qualified candidates shall be eligible to apply for the post of Lecturer only in the University / Colleges belonging to the same state whose SLET Examinations they have cleared. However,those candidates are also eligible to apply for appearing in the NET, if they so desire.

Age Limit : The upper age limit for being eligible for the test is as under :

(a) For Junior Research Fellowship (JRF):
Candidate should be 28 years for December / June Exam of the corresponding year, relaxable up to 5 years in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC,physically handicapped and women applicants.

(b) For Lecturership:
There is no upper age limit.


The Test will consist ofthree papers.

Paper-I will consist of 50 objective type questions of general nature intended to assess the teaching / research aptitude of the candidate. It is designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension and divergent thinking of the candidate. Total Marks of Paper-I will be 100.

Paper-II will consist of 50 objective type questions based on the subject selected by the candidate. The candidates will have to mark their response for each question on the answer sheet attached at the end of the test booklet. Total Marks of Paper-II will be 100.

Paper-III will have four sections :

Paper-III - Section - 1: It requires the candidates to write a critique of a given passage. Five questions will be asked on this passage requiring an answer upto 30 words. It shall carry 25 marks. In case of science subjects, a theoretical problem will be set for the candidates to analyse. The questions will be based on Paper-III(A).

Section - 2: Fifteen questions will be asked on the syllabus of Paper-III(A). The questions will be definitional or seeking particular information and are to be answered in upto 30 words each. Each question will carry 5 marks (15X5=75 marks) There will be no internal choice.

Section - 3: Questions will be asked on all major specializations / electives and the candidates will be asked to choose one specialization / elective and answer the five questions from it. The questions will be set from the syllabus of Paper-III(B). There is no internal choice. Each question will be answered in up to 200 words and shall carry 12marks (5X12=60 marks). Where there is no specialization/elective, 5 questions will be set across the syllabus Paper-III.

Section - 4: Essay writing - One question with internal choice on general themes and contemporary, theoretical or of disciplinary relevance will be given. The question will be answered in 1000words and shall carry 40 marks.

The total marks for Paper-III(A) and Paper-III (B) will be 200 marks.

At thestart of the first session, Paper-I will be distributed and the answer sheetswill be collected at the end of the alloted time.

Paper-II will be distributed 15 minutes after the end of Paper-I in the same session.

A candidate who does not appear in Paper I will not be permitted to appearin Paper-II / Paper-III

Paper-III will be evaluated only for those candidates who are able to secure a minimum of such aggregate marks in Paper-I and Paper-II as fixed by the Commission. The total marks and duration of Papers I, II & III are as given below:

Candidates qualifying for the award of Junior Research Fellowships will be eligible to receive fellowship under various schemes subject to finding their placement in the University /IIT.


The validity of the offer is one year w.e.f. the date of issue of JRF award letter. However, in case the candidate has already joined M.Phil/Ph.D., the date of commencement of fellowship will be from the date of declaration of examination result


The amount of the fellowship is Rs.12,000/- per month at present. The progress of the research work done by a JRF on the completion of two years of the award may be assessed as per the procedure laid down by the Commision. The fellowship may be withdrawn if the work is not considered satisfactory. The fellowship for the third and subsequent years will be Rs. 14,000/- per month.Candidates who will qualify the test for eligibility for Lectureship will be governed by the rules and regulations for recruitment of Lecturers of the concerned Universities /Colleges/ State Govts. etc. Candidates qualifying JRF shall avail the award within one year from the date of issue of the award letter .
