Nagpur youth's moon rover selected for Nasa contest

Peetak, a Khamla resident, and his team designed this project as part of a Nasa contest in which universities from all over the world were invited to design and fabricate a Lunar rover-cum-excavator for the US space agency's 'Mission Moon'.

"Nasa has planned to restart missions on moon in 2018 by sending a rover. Contestants from all over the world were invited to design a rover with a minimum criterion that it would collect 10kg weight within 15 minutes. Over 160 teams from European countries, Japan, and Australia apart from the United States participated in the contest. From these entries, 20 best were selected," an elated Peetak told TOI.

"Of those 20 teams, ours, having nine members, was the only one from India. Best brains from renowned institutions around the globe were among participants," said the teenager who is currently pursuing second year engineering from Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra, Ranchi, and had completed his schooling from Somalwar Nikalas School in Khamla.

Peetak lost his father about a decade back and mother is runs a business. Despite being a student of civil engineering branch, his main interest is in space exploration. "I was always fascinated by the mysteries of space. In future I may work in the aeronautical sector. But my ultimate dream is to work with Nasa," he said.
