Nagpur :- Asstt returning officer in NU BoS polls quits

This time, controversy has erupted in during the board of studies (BoS) polls which are underway. The episode resulted in Vilas R a m t e k e , deputy registrar in NU, resigning as assistant returning officer of the polls to protest alleged "pressure tactics" by a strong political group. Sources claimed Ramteke had recommended rejection of some nominations for BoS elections as they were not as per rules. After this, registrar Mahesh Yenkie rejected the nominations of 10 persons as many of them are believed to have submitted "forged" documents just like the tainted DNC lecturer earlier.

This time, however, all norms were strictly being adhered to. The candidates whose nominations were rejected, details of which were given on NU website, filed an appeal with vice-chancellor Vilas Sapkal. He also dismissed their appeals. Sources stated the group leaders then targeted Ramteke and demanded his removal. They also pointed out that Ramteke's brother-in-law, who is in Institute of Science, was also contesting the polls and therefore Ramteke could not be part of the poll process.Even the VC was pressured to reverse the rejection of 10 nominations but he reportedly remained firm. Ramteke confirmed he had resigned as poll officer as "some political leaders were pressuring him to go against rules. "I've quit as I can't sustain the stress. They seem to be carrying out a personal vendetta," he said.Yenkie, however, clarified that all decisions regarding rejection were made by him though they were on Ramteke's recommendations. "He has no role to play as I am the returning officer.
