Director of Town Planning S D Landge and local town planning officials surveyed land reserved for ring railway on Thursday. Earlier, he
convened a meeting at Ravi Bhavan to discuss the issue with railway, NMC and NIT officials and MLA Devendra Fadnavis.
Around 8,000 house owners are living without basic amenities on the land reserved for ring railway. The ring railway was conceived way back in 1976. However, a few years ago, a survey conducted by central government found the project to be unviable. NMC and NIT then sent a proposal in 2006 to the state government to dereserve the land. However, the government only gave hollow assurances in the state assembly.
Fadnavis said that all the file was awaiting signature of chief minister, who also holds the urban development portfolio. The CM had asked principal secretary (urban development) Thomas Benjamin and secretary Manukumar Srivastav to conduct a survey of the land and submit a report to him. Benjamin authorised Landge to conduct the survey and submit a report.
Landge, Nagpur town planning deputy director A C Munje, NMC town planner Digambar Meher and NIT town planner Suneeta Aloni surveyed the entire stretch of land from Kalamna to Somalwada. Fadnavis and NIT Trustee Sudhakar Kohale showed them the stark contrast between the state of civic amenities in the 300 feet stretch and the adjoining areas.
South East Central Railway (SECR) officials told Landge that they did not need the land. NMC and NIT officials told him that as the project had been scrapped there was no point in continuing with the reservation. The two authorities were unable to undertake development works in the stretch due to the reservation.
Fadnavis demanded that Landge should submit his report as early as possible so that chief minister was able to clear the proposal before the election campaigning started.
